My zine, "Zine About Hair", is about how our hair holds memories and trauma. I had this idea after watching a video from one of my favorite YouTubers, Emma Chamberlain, about the hair styles she's had in the past and wanting to change to a new one. Then I got thinking and realized how many hair styles and colors I've had in the past and how the events in my life correlated to those styles. For example, sophomore and junior years of high school, my hair changed a lot more than at other periods in my life which makes sense thinking about what was going on at the time. I started by brainstorming ideas to do on pages and deciding whether I wanted the zine to be a story or a collage of images. I settled on making it into both where you can follow a character facing events through her life and watch how her appearance changes, while also incorporating collages and visuals about the theme as a whole. I faced challenges while trying to execute certain things on photoshop or illustrator because I'm not very familiar with either. I would either search up how to do execute the vision or I would play around with the tools until I got the desired effect. I would like to get more familiar with photoshop because I think it's a very useful skill both inside and outside of art assignments. I'm very proud of the outcome of my zine because I think I was able to visually communicate my theme. I think I can improve on the detail I put into illustrator which will take a lot more patience and practice.
